Gamble House

Today, my friend Jessica and I went to go explore the Gamble House in Pasadena (designed by brothers Greene and Greene, 1908). I was thinking about incorporating wood into my senior thesis, so a professor recommended I check out this place for inspiration and a quick study on joinery and subtle details in wood. In his words, "Everything in this house was designed, all the way down to a nat's ass," and let me reassure you, this is very true. The conscious design decisions are transparent in every single part of the house and furniture with enough elegance and decorum to withstand the test of time.

If you ever have the chance, you should go visit and take the tour- it's only 7 dollars with your student id. I was sort of in love with my guide too, a little old lady with so much enthusiasm to share her knowledge and fun facts about the house. Then we went to go eat tacos. Yes, ladies and gentleman, today was a productive and educational Saturday morning.

Do you have a circle ruler?

Last night, a group of us were at school until 5 in the morning working on a mechanical project for our Materials & Methods class. It was pretty stressful trying to figure it out, but with some help from my dear friends, especially MB, I have managed to complete the exercise. Here are some pictures I took throughout the night:the beginning process of my mechanism

senioritis?

It's been a pretty unproductive week for me. I just didn't do that much work, and even missed a studio class, but I think I'm entitled to that as long as this doesn't happen again (at least not for a very long time). Well here's my work space at school:my organized chaos

I bought this bubble gum machine for $12 at a thrift store by my house. I sealed the bottom of the glass with plexi and silicone to make a fishbowl, and now, it is home to my beautiful schizophrenic goldfish. Meet Bingo, he's a chill, free-spirit, that likes to swim and dance in his free time, but sometimes thinks he's an old war veteran named Douglas and will get very crabby. Other times, he's convinced he is Mary-Kate Olsen. c'est la vie.

Be my stalker.

I am starting all over. A fresh, clean slate. I started this blog last November in great spite of the fashion program at my school, but only got around to 2 posts. Maybe the wrong reasons weren't motivation enough, which is probably a good thing, since I can go on for hours about my hatred for their overly commercialized teachings and ability to suck passion and creativity dry-- but I won't. I'm a much happier person now :)

But in efforts to catch you up to speed:
Hello! My name is Grace, and I am a senior in Product Design at an Art & Design College in the Los Angeles area. I used to study "fashion" but after a year and a half of that b., I switched my major to Product Design, where I finally found my place. yay! My new professors/mentors are awesome and see their students as individuals with different aesthetics and goals. Shouldn't that be a requirement of an art school?

Anyways, it's the 4th week of my senior year and there are a lot of things going on already, but I've decided to start this blog again for a place to record my thoughts and design process- digitally. It will also will be a big melting pot of all the things that tickle my heart pink. I'm guessing it will consist of some fashion, furniture, products, architecture, interviews of cool.rad people I see on a day to day basis (i.e. my friends), new.emerging.super.talented artists and designers (i.e. more friends), and basically more fun yippitydoodas of that nature. You love it already.
